I have been looking at the peanut lighters for sale at countycomm for a while. They come in either SS or Ti.

Here are the specs for the different models. The SS versions do not have a listed weight, but Mike from Countycomm responded to my email request and supplied approximate weights for them.

Ti Peanut – 0.5" x 1.9" – 19.9g – $34.50
Ti Split Pea – 0.5 x 1.3" – 14.3g – $29.50
SS Peanut – 0.5" x 1.9" – ~30g – $11.50
SS Split Pea – 0.5" x 1.3" – ~26g – $11.50

(I believe the above weights are dry weights, no lighter fluid added)

Features that appeal to me:
-attach to keyring (plan on adding it to a ring with my SAK and whistle so I can keep track of it easier)
-waterproof
-refillable, so I am not adding 2 or 3 mini bics to the landfill each year

So, some questions for the forum. Has anybody here used these lighters before? If so, did you like it? Are there any other waterproof lighters out there that could be attached to a keyring?

Thanks.

I have used the SS split pea for a while. Sweet lighter at a sweet price. If i had to do it again I would get the full size as the fuel does not last long enough for me, pretty small reservoir. Bullet proof construction. If you ever have trouble with it lighting, pull the wick out a little bit and bend it towards the strike wheel.

I keep one on a necklace around my neck for backup. Ladies love it.

I've got one of the SS Peanuts from a while back. It works OK but the flame is a little weak and I think it would be difficult to light in the wind.

I think a plain bic mini works much better. I'm pretty sure you can get some kydex "holsters" for a bic that have a keyring.

Do you actually currently use a bic mini? I've had one for quite some time and I can't imagine going through 2 or 3 per year unless I was a chain smoker smoking 4 packs/day.

Had the SS Peanut for a while and it has never let me down. Just remember to top off the fuel before every trip. Any lighter of this type will dry out when not used.

@daniel

I do currently use bic minis. I typically carry two of them. One in my cook kit and one in my spare/first aid/repair kit. I typically replace them at the end of the season so I don't have to worry if they have enough fuel. The dang things are so cheap that I think nothing of buying a couple more just to be sure I dont run out of lighter fluid.

That said, I wouldn't mind having a good alternative that didn't require me to toss them in the trash when they were used up. And, while I am at it, I wouldn't mind finding a good alternative that was waterproof and easy to throw on a keychain.

Not sure if the countycomm lighters are the best answer to my quandry, but they do look pretty nice. Most of the online youtube reviews that I saw were pretty glowing. But those have to be viewed with a grain of salt, since the reviewer was not reviewing them for backpacking purposes, but instead was more interested in the EDC/disaster prep mindset.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Sounds like this would fit my needs, as long as I got the peanut size. I was leary of the split pea's capacity and it sounds like others have found it to be lacking.

Yeah, I am going to be a sucker and get the Ti version. After all, it's "Gods Metal" as the website states… ;)
