I'm getting the Kahtoola Microspikes, but I'm between sizes and not sure if I should size up or down. I'll primarily be wearing these over my trail runners, but I'm a women's size 8.5 and not sure if I should get the small or medium size.

You don't want them to be loose.
I wear a size 8.5 womens shoe and my Lowa Renegade boots are also an 8.5. The size S Microspikes fit perfectly over my Lowa boot.

I highly recommend not basing sizing on shoe size alone as the outer shell of shoes/boots vary widely. For example, when I slip my spikes over my Brooks Cascadia trail runners they fit snug. Around my minimalist New Balance MT 101s they jangle around. Highly recommend trying on a pair in a store with your hike/run shoe of choice. All of this being said I love my MicroSpikes!
