Canister Stove … Not integrated … Suggestions?

So I just signed up for backpackinglight to determine if the Snow Peak GST-100 or the Soto OD-1R was the way to go. Now I’m even more conflicted, not sure if I should be adding the oilcamp stoves to the mix or the new MSR stuff.

Both the GS-100 or the OD-1R are excellent stoves. (Note: A GST-100 is getting tough to find these days; they’ve been discontinued, but the regular GS-100 is readily available).

I have both stoves; I like them both. The GS-100 is cheaper ($40 at REI.com), more compact, and has more stable pot supports. The Soto has a really nice piezoelectric ignition and a more dispersed flame which is good if you want to do more subtle forms of cooking that require low heat.

So, decide what’s most important to you, and then pick either stove; they’re both good.

If you haven’t got an overriding sense of which is the better stove, I’d go with the GS-100 which is really nice stove for the money.

Really you cannot go wrong. When I go canister, I use the snowpeak but have also used the MSR pocket rocket. The differences within this class of stove is so slight that I wouldn't sweat it. Just pick up whichever you find a deal on. They are reliable and put out a good amount of heat. For me, the slight variations in flame pattern or pot stand are just personal preference and not really good or bad. You should be pleased whichever route you go.

Thanks guys. I found the head to head comparison in the tech section as well. I think I'll start with the snow peak and see how I like it.
