With all things being equal, a windshell jacket is going to weigh somewhat less than a windshell hoody, owing to less material being used in construction. Since the material doesn't provide that much in terms of warmth (insulation) or waterproofing (my assumption–which may be incorrect), I have to ask, does anyone actually use the hood on their windshell hoody? If so, under what conditions or circumstances do you use the hood?

I have a Feathered Friends wind shell with a hood. The hood adds a great deal more warmth then I had originally thought and some additional light rain protection. I usually hike in a light ball cap and like pulling the hood over the ball cap for a nice foul weather combo. I think a wind shell with a hood is essential.

Okay, I understand now. The first link Anna provided was really helpful. I usually take a hardshell w/ integrated hood along when I go out, so I didn't really understand the reasoning behind having a hooded windshirt as well. Also, I didn't consider bugs (though bugs wouldn't hesitate to consider me).

Thanks.
