Hi,

I am doing a around the world trip coming up and will experience everything from humid/ hot china to cold switzerland. Because I am backpacking I must be conscious of the weight and the items I use must have multiple functions. Also going into foreign cultures you cannot be a billboard for huge logos (ie. Mountain Hardware ;-) .

Originally I was looking for the holly grail a all in one type jacket that could handle the cold snow in Switzerland, downpour rains, wind, heat, be breathable yet light. When I goto stores they tend to favor brands so its hard to find a good product that has more functionality than some marketing hype. I was told there is no such thing that functions well.

I need then a soft shell and hard shell for the carious climates I will face…? Should I go with a eVent type rain jacket or Goretex which is highly breathable, I will be doing alot of walking and was afraid something like the Patiagonia Torence would make me sweat inside (not have good breath-ability. What would you suggest for this lighter weight rain jacket which is packable I could use daily. For colder weather ( I get cold easily and often have blankets on at home) I would need a soft shell like the Arcteryx Atom SV or something with primaloft, which is packable, warm breathable and waterproof. Is there any better jackets out there or solutions.

Thanks for your help.

Dan:

Is this primarily backpacking (hosteling with treks here and there) or backpacking (hiking/camping)?

While awaiting your answer, re. brand names and logos — I too hate loud logos, but they are almost unavoidable. My two favorite pieces both have semi-loud logos on them. But you'll see the same trend pretty much everywhere nowadays. Asians are generally into brand names. At least you won't be splashing Gucci, Hermes or Louis Vuitton. If a piece of gear is otherwise an excellent choice, I wouldn't let the brand or logo get too much in the way.
