I'm curious to know your thoughts on the Gossamer Gear Mariposa Plus. Positive or Negative. The new ones are scheduled to be available Mid-March 2007.

I haven't tried a Mariposa o/Mariposa Plus yet, but I think it's a great pack for carrying heavier loads. If I bought one, I would prefer the Plus version, as it can be used for bushwacking. And it eliminates the only tradeoff one using ultralight gear has to cope with: the reduced durability. The Fanatic Fringe packs might be lightweight and equally durable packs, but they lack the features typical for GG.

I have the Gossamer Gear Mariposa Plus (size M/L with L belt + pads, no stays: 19.8 oz). I've put about 200 miles on it and it shows no sign of wear. My total pack weight is 24 pounds which it carries very comfortably without the carbon fiber stays (+0.8 oz). I didn't find the stays very comfortable, and if I needed them I might replace them with bendable aluminum. I chose the Plus so I could shove uncovered tent poles and other rough gear in it without worry, and I often travel off-trail. It has more than enough volume for my needs for a week. I'm quite happy with it.
