I have just recieved my new for 2012 Copper Spur UL1 and have it set up beside my MSR Hubba. My reasoning for purchasing the CS was the 8 ounces in weight savings plus the extra 4 inches in length (90 CS vs 86 for the MSR). On paper it sounded like a cant lose situation. I was wrong.
Set up next to each other the MSR may be 1.5 inches shorter in length than the CS looking from the outside. However, when I put my Neo Air All Season pad in the tent and lay down, the MSR has notably more length in the inside. I am 6'2" on a good day and with the 2012 CS, my head AND feet just barely brush the inside of the tent, but they do touch. On my old MSR, I still have about 1 inch to go with my feet and 2-3 inches before my head hits the sides.
Looking at the two side by side the walls dont seem to me appreciably steeper on the MSR, so this has me confused. Can the numbers be that much off from Big Agnes? If I go outside and stake down the CS will I gain that much more length? Dont really want to do this if it wont, as Id rather just return the tent for a refund if it wont work out.
On the plus side, I much prefer the way the cross section pole is designed on the CS and it is much easier to use. Id really like the weight savings, but I cant have a tent where my head and feet are always touching the tent.
Mar 10, 2012 at 7:56 pm #1851829Thank you for a really relevant comparison of the two.
Both were very much in consideration by my son and I as while I am 6 foot my son is considerably taller/larger and we kept finding that quoted footprint sizes were way off "useable" length. We almost bought the Copper Spur as it seemed to be the best option (although the REI extrabig quarter dome seemed bigger at a bit more weight) but we couldn't be sure as it is not available in store anywhere in Australia. The MSR is and we just loved it but it was a good 6 inches too short.
We eventually got the Henry Shires TT Double Rainbow and while there is always a bit of a trade off in strength, or at least the illusion of strength, the TarpTent is amazing for space. If you seek longer floorspace for the taller hiker then I believe it is about the best option out there.
If it was me only I would probably have gone with the Copper Spur though.
Cheers
JackoMar 10, 2012 at 8:00 pm #1851831I'm 6'4" and I fit fine in a Copper Spur 2. Never been in a 1.
Mar 10, 2012 at 9:39 pm #1851856Just spent quite a bit of time laying in the two. Upon further inspection, the MSR Hubba does have steeper foot and head walls. I measured the inside of both and they were just about the same at 86 inches. But the useable head to foot room on the MSR is much better because of those steeper walls increasing the useable length for my by about 3 inches.
Also decided that I much prefer the "d" shaped door of the MSR compared to the drop down door on the Copper Spur. Also the MSR has what appears to be a much more durable flooring material, so much so that I would be confident going without a ground cloth with the MSR, but would definataely want to get one for the Copper Spur. The stock ground cloth for the Copper Spur is 4 ozs.
I do however like the interior space of the width of the CS. However, there isnt enough to put much of anything so it would probably go to waste anyway for me. All in all, Im thinking the MSR Hubba is probably the way to go for me. Might me a new 2012 Copper Spur UL1 up on gear trade fairly soon if I cant return it!!
