Ok, I used to climb with a guy who was tolkein for bothy bags and I've endured endless brewups [everyone knows an Englishpersons life is increased by the amount of tea one drinks] but now it's basha tents. The thing looks like a tarp to me but noooo tarps are provided under a different catagory. And to top it off it's also a hootch. Come on, hootch is a relative of moonshine… unless this is a tarp that you sit under and drink hootch and do endless brewups.

You nearly got it right. A Basha is just a tarp or "shelter sheet". I think "hootch" is Australian for "basha".
By the way, the plural of "brew up" is "brews up". This subject is too sacred to allow errors in grammar to go uncorrected. Must go now – kettle's boiling for tea.

The Aussie and hootch make perfect sense. [see not only can I offend an Englishman, I can include some Austrailians too]
