I am reworking my water filter system and plan on using a .1 micron sawyer filter with a prefilter, but am having trouble deciding what prefilter to use.

MSR siltstopper 5 micron

Mesh Coffee filter, seams to range from 20 to 200 micron

Inline filter 20 to 250 micron

My question is, what size prefilter should I use? When using a .2 micron pump-style filter I have never had to filter from visibly dirty water, but there were times when what looked like clear water quickly clogged the filter. I am hoping to find a prefilter to avoid clogging the sawyer in situations like this.

Scott, I can personally recommend the siltstopper with your setup. I've been using it on my last couple of trips and it has kept the water flowing nicely. I even added some carbon inside of the siltstopper to help some with taste. I don't have any recommendations on micron size but this setup has worked well for me. You can see the results in the prefilter even after a couple of days. I have considered adding a larger micron prefilter inside the dirty water bag in the future. Probably something along the lines of a mesh coffee filter.
