I generally hike solo with a bivy and a tarp however I am looking to pick up a 2P tent to use with my girlfriend. While this isn't a UL related question I hope people will help us out. We aren't looking to spend a fortune but are willing to spend whatever is necessary for quality. We obviously want to keep weight down but aren't looking to get too crazy as we won't be putting in any big mile days. Basically, we are just looking for a good all around utility tent that we can use for weekend trips in the north east and for a trip though the florida keys later this spring. I have an 1P Marmot tent I used when I cycled the trans-am in 2003 and have sept in it well over 150 nights and have been super impressed with the quality. As I know that manufacturing standards change from year to year does anyone know if Marmot still produces quality tents?

If people could offer specific suggestions [models] I would be very appreciative.

I have looked at the REI Half Dome 2 and and to seems pretty nice.

Thanks in advance,

Brad

can you get a 2 person bug bivy that will fit underneath your current tarp? that'd be how i'd go at it. then you don't need to buy twice…

if not, time to upgrade to a fancy 4 season cuben tarp by zpacks (you can use that when soloing and when w/ the GF).

Hey Josh,

Thanks for the suggestions; however I think we are looking for the protection/privacy of a more traditional tent.

Be good.

You can get the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 for 215 bucks at STP right now with coupons. Pretty much impossible to beat that.

We've used several different lightweight 2-person tents. The absolute winner, hands down, is the Six Moons Designs Lunar Duo. You have to actually sit inside it to believe the interior volume. We've had that thing out in some serious weather, too, and it was warm and dry.

You might consider the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2, or even the Platinum version:

It's light enough so that it's almost truly ultra light; it can be used in a fly / foot print combination that is just over 1lb; and it is really very solid. I've had mine out in a downpour, in temperatures as low as the teens, in several inches of snow, and in wind with gusts up to 40mph. Steady as a rock and dry. It's a great 3-season tent that will fit your needs.

(I will say that, with temperatures around 17 degrees F and lots of wind, the interior started to get drafty. I had to put my windshell on inside my bag. But, realistically, the actual tent is made of a great deal of netting, and, in those conditions, one is pushing the boundaries of what qualifies as 3-season.)
