What is this? Caldera question

Wow. I'm a 30yr Alcohol stove veteran trying to research Gas canister cooking, finding this thread both informative and amusing.

Firstly. alcohol stoves are the safest that exist. I won't recount the my-own-eyes experiences here.

Secondly, a big part of the weight of alcohol stoves is the type of the bottle you carry the fuel in. In the end, what I eventually did was go for multiple small bottles, each selected as free left-overs from something, and I'd put one to the left of my pack, one to the right of my pack and one to the rear of my pack, no matter what happened in any accident, I'd have some fuel left, the stove itself can be bent back. I'd use these bottles up roughly evenly through a trip.

I'm going to try a canister stove for a 5-day type trip on my own, it theoretically is the same weight, more compact, and faster cooking. We can compare notes in a year from now.

There is one that might beat the alcohol Caldera Cone for safety. That is Esbit in the Caldera Cone. No chance of a fuel bottle leaking.

Smell of Esbit tabs needing some kind of container?

Fresh out of the box, the cubes are sealed air tight.

Once the seal is broken, I generally transfer them to a zip loc bag, or else I start the sealed ones in the bag.

Do the esbits need to go in your bear canister? Or do critters turn up their noses?

Also: someone suggested carrying the caldera in your bear canister, rolled along the outer edges. Seems like a good idea.

To me, a human, the stuff stinks, and I wouldn't want to taste it. However, some animals are funny. They might taste it just to see what it is. It has to be a little bit toxic, and it might even be poisonous if they got enough of it. Bears, for example, tend to eat it first and ask questions later.

I've never stored my Esbit tabs in with my food. I normally keep them sealed and inside the red box, and I throw that underneath my ground sheet while I am sleeping.

The titanium caldera is pretty tough, so I cover it with something like a caddy except much thinner and lighter. That is more to protect the other gear from the thin edges on the titanium.
