DWR for non-dwr nylon pants?

I have a few different pair of nylon pants- fabrics from about 3 osy to maybe 8 osy that I use for hiking or camp wear. Only one had DWR and it's long gone. None of these fabrics bead, most wet out instantly and become rather soaked with water or melted snow.

Would a wash-in DWR help these pants to absorb less water, maybe even bead off, but without significantly reducing breathability? The Nikwax site talks more about restoring DWR than use on previously untreated fabric.

(I have two bottles of Nikwax TX Direct Wash-In so that's what I would prefer to use)

I hope it works since I just bought a bunch of Nikwax for that purpose. I did it to a pair of pants last year, but I wore out the pants before I got to hike in the rain with them.
