For those who have done the PCT or sections of it, would you recommend the Shangri-La 1 for it?

This is going to be my first tarp purchase (never thought I would leave a tent). I've looked at some of the other ones mentioned on the forums for a week or so now and at the moment, the SL-1 is on sale.

I have done sections of the PCT only about ~100mi, I just wanted to give you a heads up that I have had/ or have the SL-1, SL-2, SL-3 and SL-5, the weight they advertise on the website is sometimes is not true. The flysheets are close in my experience but the SL2 nest was way off. I can say that they are very very high quality, strong and sturdy, the SL-1 flysheet will take about anything if you mind carrying the extra weight if you want wind protection.

For example, I just picked up a SL-2 nest this month

SL-2 nest
listed weight 24 oz
actual weight on my scale 28.35 oz

I just spent an hour seam ripping the floor off, and making a silnylon floor

Thanks for the input. I was only buying the fly sheet. No nest or anything. I have been looking at others but at the moment, the SL-1 is on sale and figured I could use the money saved buying that towards a better sleeping bag.

I used an SL-1 for Washington on the PCT (I had an MLD Grace Solo tarp the rest of the way). The SL-1 provides plenty of protection from wind and rain, but I had some condensation issues, and it's not particularly spacious.

If I had it to do over again, I'd get a plus-sized tarp like the GG SpinnTwinn or the MLD Grace Duo, which I think is the best of both worlds–large enough to provide good rain protection but without major condensation problems. Also, the SpinnTwinn weighs half what the SL-1 weighs, so you could add an inner net (you'll want one for the Sierras and OR!) and still come in at roughly the same weight as the SL1.

You should act quickly if you want the SL-1 flysheet without the nest. Once the individual items are sold out from the Clearance Closet, GoLite will only sell their tents as a bundle – fly and nest together. I've been looking for an SL-1 floor but the company has no inventory and will not be producing any more.
