I just finished a baffled Karo step winter quilt. Materials were Momentum 90 for the shell, nanoseeum for the baffles and 800fp down from downbythepound.com.
The details:
calculated loft: 3.75"
calculated temp rating: 5-10 deg F
measured loft: 4"
fill weight: 17ozbaffle height:2.5"
Karo pattern: 12/64" differential cut
trapezoidal baffled footboxfinished dimensions:
footbox circumferance: 38"
maximum width: 50"
Approx length: 72"Finished weight: 24.3oz (therefore shell weight is 7.3oz)
Thoughts on the project:
Karo step baffles are a huge pain! I think using Karo for a sewn through quilt would not add too much work, but sewing in these baffles took ages, and was very annoying.
I wanted to be able to use this in the winter, without a bivy, and because I was worried about drafts, decided to continue the footboy seam further up, to within about 25" of the top of the quilt. So it is not really a quilt or a sleeping bag. One consequence of this is that the dimensions are very tight around my hips. It doesn't seem like this impacts the lofting around my hips (the 4" differential cut is to thank, I think) but if I do feel a cold spot, or if it is just uncomfortable or annoying, I will do some (probably not all that neat) modifications to open it up a bit more. I also plan on adding one more mitten hook and o-ring about half way down the open section of the quilt to help close it down a bit. Also, I am 5'11", 155lb, size 11.5 shoes.
On a 72" thermarest, about 8" of double sided loft
trapezoidal baffled foot box
12/6 baffled Karo step pattern
Top 25" of quilt/bag is open

I will do a quick overnighter some time soon and see what it is like.
