I am trying to decide between purchasing Arcteryx's Palisade Pant or Gamma LT Pant. Which to choose? The Gamma LT is a nylon/synthetic blend, whereas the Palisade is a nylon/spandex blend.

Basically, I am looking for something of similar warmth and breathability of a trusty old pair of blue jeans. Something I can wear around town, but I can go for a nice long hike in when the situation presents. A travel pant, if you will. Would the Gamma LT pant (slightly heavier) be too warm/stifling (moisture trapping) for spring/autumn hikes?

Does anyone have both? How do they compare?

Thanks…

Gamma LT is too warm for me, but I wear shorts mountaineering.

The palisade is fine to wear around town, but I wouldn't wear the Gamma LT around town, if only because it costs $$$$ and I don't want to wash it.

If you are looking into the palisade, I would also look into the rampart long.

I dont own the Palisade but I do have the Gamma LT's.

The Gamma LT's (at least for me) are super breathable and work perfect from spring/autumn hikes. I love them.

Also, they look good and that's always a plus.

I have Ramparts (same fabric, different cut as the Palisades I believe) and Gamma LTs. The Gammas are probably a little warmer than a pair of jeans (because they're less breathable), but not by much, while the Ramparts are so breathable they're impossible to sweat out. I grab the Ramparts when I'm not looking for warmth or protection from rain/snow. The Gammas will keep me warm while on the move into super low temps and I sweat in them a bit at 60-70º temps, but feel super nice and I'm still not hot until 85º+ with them.

Both are on different sides of the spectrum of jeans, as you might have guessed. They both have great temperature ranges and overlap a lot, but Ramparts are better in the heat and Gammas excel in the elements.

I should have stated my weather conditions. Winter: 0 – 10 deg C/ 32 – 40 deg F. Windy, sometimes rainy. Basically windy PNW-type weather. But as I mentioned, these would primarily be town pants, so I wouldn't want to overheat in them riding the subway, sitting in a cafe, etc.

gamma lts at those temps …

the problem with the pallisades and ramparts is that during enough rain, youll feel the coldness from the rain falling on your inner thighs as they are basically nylon pants … the water doesnt get through but the wet rain does seep the heat out of yr legs

the gammas lts have less of this issue … and wearing thigh length boxers helps as well

as i said i own and have used both in those exact conditions

edit … well maybe not around town =P

You don't have to worry about overheating a pair of Gamma LTs at 40º in town. They'll excel in those conditions.

I was more worried about overheating in them when I am indoors.
