came in from a trail run yesterday (cold and windy) and thought I was going to have some of my favorite anatomy fall off :)

I had merino boxers and R1 bottoms, everything was relatively warm except for one critical area

so looking for something that would cut the wind effectively- boxer preferred, but would consider a brief as well

danke

Not sure how open you are to the idea but I found that using compression shorts has fixed that problem for me. I guess it has something to do with keeping "everything" closer to the body and all. Though a windproof brief does sound nice.

My brother in law and I have a running joke surrounding this thing, but apparently it works.

Thermajock

Use at your own risk Mike.

On a serious note, something like the Thermajock could allow you to use your existing running shorts and tights, further extending their use into subzero territory.

the merino boxers keep things pretty close, but evidently not close enough :)

Eugene- that's a crazy looking bit, but it just might work!

I did find that Ibex makes a windproof boxer, basically a boxer w/ a windproof pouch- little spendy though

found "the hand" as well http://storm.cadcam.iupui.edu/drs/fabrics/ price is right anyways

Adult diapers are 1) windproof, 2) waterproof, 3) insulated, and you don't even have to stop when that morning coffee hits your bladder.

It works for love-sick, homicidal NASA astronauts!

Seriously: just tuck a piece of a supermarket plastic grocery bag in there. It will block the wind and add a little dead-air space.

You could go all water-proof/breathable, membraney, Gore-tex but the thing is obviously waterproof. It actually likes being in warm, humid places.

I'm using R1 pants and Speedwork tights depending on temp (find the R1's warmer) they both work well ie warm, yet breathable

there is only one thing not warm enough and it's only if it's cold AND windy

is there a particular tight your thinking of?

I have some MB wind pants I could probably layer over these, might be a little overkill though????

David- posted the same time you were, that might just work- worth a try and the price is definitely right!

"but the thing is obviously waterproof."

Mine's obviously made out of some anti-wool material. It only shrinks in cold water……

Wind briefs are key, I've had to improvise with a stuff sack on a few trips that got colder than I thought. Currently I used a pair of capilene boxer-briefs with non-coated .9 oz ripstop sewn over that crucial area.

XC ski racers use windbriefs as standard equipment. Your local nordic shop should have them.

>"It only shrinks in cold water……"

LOL. Only in the short term. With age, everything gets bigger, hairier, and closer to the ground.

I needed a laugh, looked through recent posts, saw Doug's name next to a thread about boxers and briefs and figured it was a pretty safe bet..
Thanks:)

I noticed smartwool makes merino briefs with the nylon patch David spoke of. I was coveting a pair for ski touring.

Brooks made a pair awhile back. A good pair of briefs felt more sanitary than a sock…

helly hansen makes them. sugoi makes them aswell. pretty standard stuff in wool or synthetic at running shops. take a stroll down the internet running shops etc.

found a pretty good price on the Smartwool ones and ordered a pair, I'll report back how they do-all my merino boxers are from Ibex and I really like the fit/feel, but couldn't find any decent sales on them

"so looking for something that would cut the wind effectively- boxer preferred, but would consider a brief as well"

I used to use a pair of briefs with a goretex patch sewn over the critical area for winter running. It was a very effective piece of gear. I don't know if they still make them, but it would be worth checking around. Alternatively, you could do a MYOG version by sewing a goretex patch over the area. Or Event, or any other windproof material.

I just got a pair of the EMS wind boxers in the mail today. Can't go wrong for $12.50.. I'm going to test 'em out tomorrow, but they look pretty satisfactory, albeit not merino. I bet that Ibex pair is real nice.

Angelo- those were the ones I was first looking at as I've been very impressed w/ my regular Ibex boxers, but couldn't find them on sale anywhere, found a pretty good price on the Smartwools so pulled the trigger on them. We'll see if they are up to snuff like the Ibex ones :)

got my Smartwool wind boxers and have wore them running twice in some pretty cool and windy conditions (20's w/ ~ 30 mph winds)- they work! :)

they are a little longer than my Ibex boxers which is a plus, they are not quite as tight in the thighs as the Ibex which is a minus (for running anyways)

anywho if my buddy is happy, I'm happy
