Xmas was good to me this year. Someone got me an Atom SV hoody, and it has just been awesome. I haven't owned a 100G Synthetic Jacket since the Backcountry.com Siphon jacket, and I must say that I am very impressed. The two jackets are strikingly similar in regards to materials…

I already have a Down Sweater Hoody that has been a godsend for the past two years. Has been sufficient with a fleece for everything except the negatives.

Now, it seems somewhat redundant to have the Down Sweater AND the Atom SV. I have to get rid of one of them, it seems, but I don't know which one.

I live in the Rockies, and am an avid skier and backpacker (in the warmer months). I already have an R2 fleece and two warmer, down jackets (Fitz Roy Hoody and Sub Zero SL), so I think a good synthetic layer is something that is missing from the kit.

The Atom SV and the Down Sweater Hoody each have their pros and cons.

Atom SV:

Pros:
– Fleece lined handwarmer pockets
– Awesome cuffs
– Durable exterior fabric
– More weather resistant

Cons:
– Hood is somewhat odd, doesn't move with your head very well
– Heavier than the Patagonia
– Doesn't pack into itself nor comes with a stuff sack

Down Sweater Hoody:

Pros:

– Very warm for its weight
– Extremely compressible
– Fantastic hood, moves with you
– Packs into itself

Cons:
– No fleece in handpockets
– Material isn't as durable
– HIGH winds can seep through seams.

Both are the same price retail, both are in excellent condition, which should I get rid of?

Thanks again for your insight.

I think down was invented for the temperate climes of the Rockies. The only issue would be the fit, Patagonia regular fit can be kind of baggy where as the Arcteryx is nice and slim cut.

While I agree that the down rules in the Rockies, if all your other gear is down it's nice to have a synthetic just for some diversity. Having the Atom lets you take trips to wetter climes with much less worry about your down.

Personally I would keep both and use whichever one was more appropriate for the given weather forecast and climate, but if you're set on selling I'd say keep the Atom and sell the patagonia.

Keep them both.

Overlap? Where?

Unless you have an additional synthetic piece with comparable warmth to the SV, then I don't see overlap here.

does yr down sweater fit under yr sv? … if so keep both and use both …

if it doesnt … id keep the SV since you have enough down

besides the dead bird logos works better in bars as a pick up than patagucci IME ;)

The tend to over the same temperature ranges. The Atom SV seems JUST as warm, yet more weather resistant at the cost of being less packable and heavier.

And yea, I guess the Down Sweater DOES fit under the SV. But I have warmer jackets for that purpose.

Thoughts?

If this an effort to reduce your possessions than I suppose you could ditch the Down Sweater hoody, it's only slightly warmer than the SV but weighs almost the same (SV weighs ~16oz. medium- Patagonia DS Hoody ~15oz.) , but lacks the versatility. The Patagonia DS hoody is a good stationary down garment for cool/cold conditions, whereas the SV will lend itself to being worn while active and layers well both over and under other pieces, as well as functioning as a good static camp jacket in temps at freezing….it just does a little more for you while still providing comparable warmth.

Compressibility on the SV is pretty dang good for a 100g synthetic jacket and on par with the Patagonia Down Sweater hoody really, just roll up the body of the jacket into the hood and/or fill the voids in the top of your pack. If you feel the perceived warmth of the SV matches that of your older down sweater then go with that.

keep the SV then … the insulation will degrade eventually … but thats life

there are places in the world where synth is quite useful

besides for social situations, few outdoor brands beat dead bird ;)

What do you mean eventually degrade?

Man, this is the only dead bird piece I have ever even considered venturing going into town with.

he means that the synthetic fill will degrade over time.

try not to overstuff it. synthetic stuff just doesn't last as long as down does right now.

it excels in other areas, such as climates with high humidity or usage while active.

synthetic insulation degrades the more you compress or wash it

i own and use a dead bird atom lt … and no matter what the marketing says … itll lose its loft eventually
