So I'm looking to make a prototype tarp but have limited silnylon on hand (ie I can only make one). I'm impressed by the reviews of the MLD Trailstar and can make a replica (slightly smaller with 72" sides though). I can also make a 60" sided regular hexagon tarp. They'll both be the same weight but the hex will probably be a comfortable 2+ and the pentamid more of a cramped 2 man.

I'm wondering why there aren't any hexagonal designs like the trailstar? I've seen a few large hexamid tents for winter and then ZPacks, but their product is asymetrical and not what I'm looking at.

Does anyone have experience hexagonals? I'm looking at using this primarily as a winter desert tarp. So minimal snow but plenty of wind, like Southern UT in just a few days ;)

I'll probably just make the hexamid design since I know the pentamid trailstar is proven. If I don't like the hexamid, well my silnylon was a $1/yd find at the local fabric shop so something more professional is in the pipes anyway. Still any advice would be appreciated.

What is the difference between 6 sides and 5 sides?
Not very much. One stake?

Don't make it too small

With a pyramid tent, you can't put your sleeping bag right up against the side of the tent, because it slopes inward. And you don't want to touch the tent walls with your sleeping bag. Wind or snow load can push the wall inward.

You need 6 inches or 1 foot all the way around.

That's what I needed to hear. I think I was getting caught up in the details too much (you don't want to see my spreadsheets that dimension way too many types of shelters).

I'm just going to make a string mockup and see which fits me better.

Thanks for giving me some perspective Roger!

A very cheap mock up can be made with the plastic painters drop sheets. That and some packing tape will allow you to make a prototype or two before you cut your silnylon .
I would do that after the string one once the string version passe your test.
