For those of you who have made synthetic quilts with climashield Apex, or Primaloft for that matter…. can you chime in and give me an idea of their size while compacted in stuff sack??

I have 20 degree down bag that has been quite comfortable at freezing temps, weighs 2 lbs 4 oz, and compacts down to about 13" x 6 to 7" diameter, fits nicely in the bottom of any medium sized backpack. It's just too hot when the temps are above 50 degrees.

I would like to make a summer quilt, possibly with the 3.3 Apex available at Quest. Hope to save at least a pound or so in comparison to my down bag. But I am concerned how small its going to compact.

Does Quest have APEX for sale? I don't see it on their website, only PL Sport.

Also from Quests site:

COMPRESSION SIZE OF A 4 YD PC.
3 oz. PRIMALOFT = apprx. 16" x 8" x 5"
(640 cubic inches with scrim)

Actually, I meant http://www.owfinc.com for the Climashield, not Quest. They list "CS 4.0 APEX" for sale which is 3.3 ounces.

But thanks for the reference point, I had missed that on Quest's site. 4 yrds of primaloft compacted to 16 x 8 x 5 is not so bad, seeing as how it is similar to Apex in compactability and I would probably only use 3 yards.

If you compact synthetic insulation too much in your pack, it will gradually lose loft over time. Better to compress it as little as possible.

It is only for 3-5 day section hikes, and otherwise will hang uncompressed in the closet like my down bag does.

I think that if you tightly compress it in your pack for 3 to 5 day section hikes, it will lose loft over time.

Since you're asking about how small it can compress, I'm thinking maybe you'll tightly compress it in your pack.

For the sake of the OP, I have a pretty basic-sized quilt made from CS Combat 3.7 that will compress a bit smaller than a football.

HOWEVER, as has been mentioned, for the sake of loft loss I do not specifically 'compress' the quilt into a small sack. I place it in an oversized sack/pack liner, place it at the bottom of my pack and allow the weight of my gear to do any needed compression– I'd say that this is the general consensus of many on these forums. I find that it helps fill out my pack (making it less lumpy) and makes for a more comfortable carry.

Awesome, that gives me a good idea (and also hope since it seems a synthetic summer quilt could be smaller than my down bag after all).

I suppose when I order materials and make it, I will make a simple drawstring bag to hold it and not a "stuff" sack.

Thanks guys.

owfinc.com has 3.3 oz climashield which may be light enough for you. Of course you'll have to deal with them constantly tinkering with the site like they have been the past week =/

I may do the 3.3 from owfinc, but I thought if splitting was possible I could save a few bucks.

I
ll have to think about it– thanks.
