I am awaiting a purchase from MLD. And perhaps this is a silly question, but I am hoping for insight from those who have or have used a trailstar. In most cases, it seems that people either set it up with a "high door" corner-up pitch, or "low door" side-up pitch. Granted, the trailstar can be pitched in other ways, but these two seem the most common.

Has anyone added a bug skirt to a trailstar? I assume one would need to make a sort of curtain entrance at whichever side one typically makes the door. Other than limiting the possible pitching options, and a little extra weight, any other downsides? My primary use would be 3 season, upper Midwest. I'm not a fan of being limited to a bivy to escape the skeeters and my wife and I want to be able to share our quilt.

Just thinking…

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Thanks Ceph. I had seen that thread previously but had not followed all of the referenced links. Good thoughts in them. I was thinking that a skirt would be less weight than a full inner for two. It would definitely limit the pitch options, but that might be acceptable…

Not a lot out there for a Trailstar. I would use a Golite Cave Nest 2, but they are not made anymore(about 4-5 years old.) This tapers to the back pretty steeply and down towards the back. I believe it is a Jardine designed item so check his site.

I don't usually recommend his site for much, but I like is tarps and shelters even at the expense of some added weight…they are effective, simple and easy to setup.

I would recommend modifying his design so that it a simple A-Frame, though. This simplifies setups to 4 stakes and a couple attachments to a trailstar. And use a simple 42" front height, and 18"-20" rear height. A lot like the Cave or Lair nest's.

100% bug free….

I have used these in the ADK's for many years, and, can recommend them for weight (14-16oz) and simplicity of setups. You can cut that weight some with a silnylon or cuben floor and small zipper. Blackflies, mosquitoes, punkies (no-seeums,) deerflies often swarm on the canoe routes, one or the other will be after your blood…

A draped skirt will work but can wick moisture in, unless you leave it back 6-8" from the edges, and, extra long. But, these are not 100% against mosquitoes, spiders, ticks, bedbugs, etc…

Nice boat, BTW. I have a Minny II.
