I've worn them pretty much everyday since I got them last week (no shame ;)–this includes cross country skiing in 20 degree alpine conditions (with merino base), ski resort on 35 degree day, hiking and running in the Boulder footshills, biking around town in the snow (with no base), and climbing at the gym. Super versatile pants with a really nice stretch to them. Breathable and just warm enough. Ad base in alpine winter conditions. They also look like pretty ordinary pants, so you can go from trail to town without looking like the techy gear nerd that you probably are if you are on this forum.

I recently spent too much time shopping for a replacement for some old cloudveil softshell pants. I ended up with Patagonia Simple Guides and they are awesome so far. A few notes:
I wear a 30/30 and my pants are usually a touch longer than I'd prefer. Patagonia has sizing issues. I started with a small. They had a 32" waist and were a good 3" too long. I got an XS, which I've never worn before and they fit great. If you're not skinny, these would never work.
Polyester rules for this application. Nylon ones I've had didn't make good winter pants. They get wet. Unfortunately there are a ton of nylon softshell pants around but not too many polyester ones.
I've found the best winter pant to be something I can roll up when grunting up 5000 ft of vertical on a mild day. The Simple Guides have a nice wide hem that I can roll up and it says put. Calf zips don't work well for that.
the Rock Guides must be cut similar to the Simple Guides, as I also find it very handy to be able to roll my pants up when it starts getting warmish- I can roll them to my knees w/o much effort
Spelt, how do you modify pants with zippers on the lower half?
