So now that it's the off season, I've been putting some work into lightening my gear. My main focus is bikepacking, so space is just as important as weight. I ride with a Osprey Talon 22 pack(20L), a frame bag(~5L), and a seat bag on my bike(10L). Only having these 35 liters of storage, it was apparent that I needed to trim some things.
I started with this… My previous cook setup was a GSI Soloist 1.1L pot with cup and lid, and a Gigapower canister stove. This was a simple and pretty effective kit, but I wanted to get away from the bulky cartridges that are impossible to tell how full they are, and get a smaller pot, as I use it only to boil water for freeze dried meals.
I first made a penny stove out of two cola cans and then gave the redbull cans a go. It came out great!
it holds 1.5oz of fuel(denatured alcohol), which will burn for just over 10 minutes. It will boil 2 cups of water in under 5 minutes. I played around with a few different pot stand ideas, and finally came up with this design. It's a wind screen and pot stand in one. It is also large enough in diameter than I can use it with my 1.1L pot that I had prior. With that pot, I was able to boil 4 cups of water on 1.5oz of fuel. So I could use this setup with that pot for a two person trip if needed. The whole system, including lighter, 6oz of fuel, windscreen, stove, and priming dish all nest inside of the 700ml pot.
I haven't weighed the complete setup yet, as I just ordered a scale on Amazon, I will add that info when I get it.
