I recently had a customer contact me about making a down hood that would be useful for belaying in 0F temperatures. This is the result:

With (Bicycle) Helmet – Front
helmet_hood_1

With (Bicycle) Helmet – Side
helmet_hood_2

With (Bicycle) Helmet – Back
helmet_hood_3

Without Helmet – Front
helmet_hood_4

Without Helmet – Side

Ben,

You are crazy in the coconuts!!

That thing looks superb! I can't believe you have a helmet under there in the first pic. I'm waiting to see what you can do when someone asks you to make a jacket.

I think Ben already made a down jacket, as well as a pair of down pants and I believe the results were typical Ben- phenomenal.

I saw the pants. They looked amazing, but I must have missed the jacket.

I'll trawl back through this weekend coming and see what I can find.

Is there a velcro closure in the front? It's hard to tell from the pictures.

What shell material are you using? (trying to compare to 3oz pertex offering from Nunatak, but they only quote "2+ oz" of 875 FP down .)

M90 shell.

Take into account that this is climbing-helmet compatible, and has 1.25" baffles.

Built with regular dimensions, slightly smaller baffles, and 2oz of down, you would be looking at a 3oz weight. Less than that for a cuben or 7d/M55 hood.

Thanks for the info.

How does the face area enclosure work? Are there mini linelocs and drawstring hidden in there somewhere?

Yep – one on each side of the face, about 3/4's of the way down from the top.

Slick, Ben – Something like that could make one take a second look at quilts in winter.
