I am currently looking at new shelters and I have been looking at the Z-Packs Hexamid Solo Plus Tarp with Beak and Net Tent and the SMD Skyscape X. I currently use the GG SpinnShelter and an Alpinlite Bug Tent 1.5 that run 20.35oz after seam sealing. That has been my primary shelter since 2008/2009. I have been thinking that I would like to try a side entry shelter with more headroom than my SpinnShelter, just to try something different. I have a Gatewood Cape and it is too short for my comfort and worry about similar shelters like the Hexamid Solo Plus being short as well. The tarp looks like it would be long enough, but when you add the bug net in the summer months, it cuts into the length quite a bit. Can anyone share there experiences with either of these shelters?
Any other shelters to look at?
I want full coverage when needed
I need bug protection other than a bivy in the summers
I need decent interior volume as I toss and turn a lot and am a space hog.
I am 6’ 160lbs with a tall 21” torso
The lighter the better (it has to be under 20oz or it is heavier than what I have)
If it only uses one pole, that is better – I am thinking about not taking trekking poles since I carry them most of the time anyways.
I think the perfect shelter might be a bigger SMD Wild Oasis in Cuben without the perimeter bug netting and with a removable insert (something bigger than the serenity shelter).
Thanks for your input.
