Lands End has some good prices on budget down right now. I know there have been some threads about their jackets before, so you can research some of them if you want. All outerwear has another 25% off, so for example, I picked up this "Men's Regular Lightweight Down Jacket" for $26.25. Link: http://www.landsend.com/pp/StylePage-394578_8L.html?CM_MERCH=Shopping_Cart . I called and they could not give me a weight on the jacket and I know it may not reach UL status, but for the price I had to give it a try. It's 600 power fill and they claim it's good from -15 to 5 degrees, we will see. They also have several Ladies jacket on sale.

I got my jacket today and I am a little surprised by the weight. I realize that I should not expect it to be top of the line for $26, but I didn't expect it to be 21 oz…

A question for you modders out there; there are a few areas that could be lightened, but I'm not sure what to expect as a gain. The two front pockets have fleece linings and could be removed. Additionally, it has knit cuffs which could be removed and replaced with elastic. I know, it would only be a guess, but anyone care to estimate the weight reduction of such mods? I would like to keep the jacket, it seems well made and warm, I would just like to reduce the weight.

Anyone able to give a guesstimate on possible weight savings from removing the pockets and cuffs on a jacket like this?
Thanks in advance.
