Hi,

I'm looking for a family tent for next year and would like some advice. What I'm looking for is:
– lightweight
– 4 person
– ideally two doors on opposite sides
– almost tall enough for an adult to stand
– quality build
– well waterproof

I've been looking at the big agnes tents and the Soda Mountain SL looks like it may be a match. I've a got a fly creek UL2 which I love, so I know they can make decent tents.

Any others to recommend?

Thanks,
Dan

We use a Tarptent Hogback, and it works well. You won't be able to stand up in it, and it's not a good choice for very windy and exposed areas. It's tough to beat the 4 lbs for 4 people weight.

A Hogback will meet all your criteria except an adult's being able to stand up. A bit tight for two adults and two kids but it'll work.

If your budget allows, a Stephenson's Warmlite 5R would be even better.

We got our Hogback for 2 adults + 2 teenagers, heights varying between 5'2 and 6'2. Last weekend we managed to fit our packs inside at our heads and our Exped mattresses all lined up in a row. Plenty of room sitting up but an adult couldn't stand, only crouch. The 2 vestibules are not big. Overall, we are very happy with the useable space for only 4lbs.

I was in your shoes last year. After a lot of reading/studying/talking/looking/experimenting we wound up with a GoLite Shangri-La 5. It does not meet your desire for 2 doors, but it has a lot of other qualities I found attractive.

I'm not convinced a perfect lightweight 4-person tent exists, but I'm quite pleased with our Shangri-La 5 and Nest.

I recently upgraded to a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL4 from the UL3 for the extra space without significant weight penalty. OK, this isn't an ultralight tent as we understand on this forum, but as a family tent it's everything I wanted.
