I was thinking last night while laying on my EXPED DAM9 car camping, I wonder if it matters which side is down? I've had it for over 7 years now, bought with low miles on it from a friend who did not send any instructions with it if applicable. On the exterior, one side is black and one side is gray. Does it matter, do you know?:) I have an original NeoAir, small and that uses the silver side down. Thanks.

Which side down, older DAM9?

On my newer Exped 7 Downmat, the black side is up, although it really doesn't matter very much. The black fabric is probably slightly comfortable if you're sleeping directly on it, but I haven't tried the gray. The main reason is that the valves are on the gray side, and it might be slightly annoying to rest on them or scrape up against them at while sleeping. I guess a rowdy sleeper could probably even accidentally deflate the mat.
Yes,
Some mats have an insulating layer attached to one side, the Exped DAM are filled with down so it does not matter apart from what Andy said.

My old DAM has the valves sticking straight out from the one end, not up or down. I didn't know if there were any factors involved or not.
