I'm a huge fan of thin socks (i generally wear flip flops when not hiking) and haved used Smartwool Ultralight Running socks (or whatever the no cushion ones are called) for 2 seasons now. End of both seasons, have to buy new socks. I only hike about 400 miles a season, and this last pair only lasted about 200, which is just retarded. Anyone found super thin socks that don't have throw away fragility?

Edit- I spelled retarded wrong, which is… well, you get it.

u have 2 strikes against you

1. thin
2. merino (i assume) wool

combine the 2 and dont expect them to last very long as socks are the one piece that are constantly rubbing …

synthetic may be a better choice or a synth/wool blend … merino wool at light weights is not durable

I have 100% nylon socks that have lasted 40 years. Everything else wears out much too quickly.

I have been using DeFeet Air-e-ators for years with great results. They are durable, thinny-thin (ala Clelland!), never hurt my feet, and the black color speeds drying in the field. Lightweight too.

Some promising stuff here, I hadn't thought about it but looking for a synthetic alternative is probably important. Just have to find which one has a snug fit and no cushion.

I converted to DryMax socks this season (hyper thin model). They've been great so far. I've got 3-4 pairs at about 0.6oz per pair. I normally wear one pair and pack 1-2 pairs.

You'll want to side to the small side if you buy these, because they have quite a bit of stretch. My shoe size (9) is between the M and L, so I originally ordered one in each size. The medium fits fine and I could likely stretch into a small pretty easily too. The large is too big.

I probably don't have more than 50-70 miles on any one pair, but no signs of trouble so far.
