The spandex shorts are great for thigh chafing. Not sure how much they would do for the butt area proper.

About one or two drops of sun screen will get the job done. Plus, you will probably already have that along.

"Seriously..where are the kilt guys? "

Prevention goes a LOOOOOOOOOOONG way. Use Band Aid blister block before you start. Works every time. Cheaper and lighter than Body Glide and lasts twice as long. Smells better, too!

Kilt guy? Right here, Ive been using Body glide and its done just fine. I am going to try out the band-aid brand once I finish off this stick because the smell of bodyglide mixed with crotch can get rather unpleasant after a few days. Doesnt bother me much but I do most of my trips sharing a tent with the GF.

bodyglide has some anit-fungal properties, doesn't look like the bandaid blocker does- if that's a concern

Just take a sponge bath every day…helps a lot when using these products, I've never grown mushrooms down there :)

“try underarmor heat gear compresion shorts as your base layer”

+1; except I’m cheap. I use tightie whities.
Also most of my sweat is coming down my back and will drain right into the gluteals. In addition I do 2 more things:
1. Keep my shirt(s) un-tucked so most of the sweat drainage will be on the outside.
2. On my backpack backs, I place a small chamois cloth in the holders (like the Murmur or Mariposa). I’m always amazed how this draws the sweat from the shirt, through the down coat (if cold), and onto the cloth. At every rest stop I make sure the cloth sits in the sun to dry. This cloth becomes a multi-use item throughout my trip.

Barry..I'm cheap too, and will use non-cotton underwear, which I did by accident on this last trip. That was the beginning of my problem. But 1+ on the chamois.

So I just watched Mike C!'s recent video on clothing and he wear running shorts underneath his hiking pants. I wonder if that prevents chafing and rawness.

I have avoided all creams and lotions due to the mess. I take a mix of regular foot powder and medicated foot powder as well as a couple of wipes per day. If there is any sign of chaffing I will wipe and use the powder. I also use this powder on my feet to keep athletes feet and general smell at bay. (I had pretty smelling feet on my thru hike!) Finally, boxer briefs combined with very lightweight shorts or pants keep the critical areas cool.
