I'm looking for a do it all WPB shell that is durable and sub 1 pound. The primary use is a ski shell but it will also get used for backpacking. The more versatile and durable the more I'm willing to spend. A medium ArcTeryx Theta SL fits perfectly even with a fleece and light down jacket. Features that stand out are thigh length and a stow away hood. What other WPB shells should I be looking into?

Here are a few that I was looking at not long ago. My top criteria at the time was highly breathable and waterproof (eVent or similar fabric), and about 13oz or less.

I believe all are currently available online, but there are at least a couple that probably wouldn't be great as ski shells (like the Spektr).

Weights are approximate for size large:

Eddie Bauer BC 200 parka, 3-layer 20K/25K WeatherEdge Pro, 11oz
Patagonia M10, unknown, 11oz
Montane Spektr, eVent, 7.5oz
Rab Demand Pull-On, eVent, 10oz
Rab Momentum Jacket, eVent, 12oz
Rab Drillium Jacket, eVent, 12oz
Westcomb Specter LT Hoody, eVent, 11oz
Integral Designs Thru-Hiker Jacket, eVent, 12oz
Arcteryx Alpha LT Jacket, Gore-Tex Pro, 13oz
OMM Cypher Jacket, eVent, 10oz
OMM Cypher Smock, eVent, 8.5oz

Mammut Felsturm Half Zipp.

It's the new Gore Active Shell. A mens large is 290 grams.

I had and returned one last week and i can say it was sweet sweet sweet! I only returned it as the hood was just a tad small for a helmet or i should say too small.

I could tell though just trying the coat on that i could wear it as a wind shell running on cold winter days with no breathing problems.

Also check out the Mammut Gipfelgrat JAcket "Neo Shell" i also had one of these shipped and kept it as it is a bad ass burly alpine shell.

I also had but returned the Rab Stretch Neo Shell and that coat was also sweet! At something like only 480 grams it just about fits you 1lb or sub 1lb requirement.

Both jackets made with Neo Shell have stretch. However the Mammut Gipfelgrat has tons of stretch and is so bomber i could never imagine busting a seam even if i wore it skin tight. It does weigh like 700 some odd grams though.

Hope that helps, i think you should check out the Felstrum. The orange color in person is sweet sweet sweet, easily teh nicest looking and built jacket i have maybe ever seen other than the hood problem. If you are not gonna wear a helmet though the hood is sweet sweet sweet! Wish i could justify keeping both coats :(

P.S.
The Patagonia M-10 jacket is also sweet i returned that also for the Mammut coat in the end. If it was not for the Mammut coat it would be the Rab or the M-10?

looks like the M10 has been discontinued by Patagonia :(- is there a current replacement? Looks like a dandy- 3 layers, long pit zips all at 10 ounces- not too shabby

The Super Pluma jacket by Patagonia…. but its like $499. Essentially a direct competitor to the Arcteryx Alpha LT.

Get the M10 if you can, seems like a great shell.

Check with Patagonia outlets? Was being clearanced a few months ago.

Rab Momentums were also being clearanced for 150-200 which is a steal. I'm very happy with the (sale priced) m10 tho.

There are still some online retailers with m10's in stock, though size and color choices are limited.

My couple-years-old Marmot Exum jacket, a size small, weighs 15 ounces…
I wear it as my go-to winter/alpine shell, and whenever I expect to encounter brambles/locust/olive; I imagine an Exum will survive many years of your intended use.

Just got off chat with Dave from Patagonia. He said the Super Cell Jacket ($249) is the replacement for the M10. He also said that the Supercell (13oz Pac-lite, essentially a Paclite Rain Shadow with a better hood) would be more durable AND breathable than the M10.

Is this true?

The two I didn't see on the earlier list are:

-Patagonia torrentshell 11.5oz $130 at rei.cocm
-Westcomb Specter LT Hoody 11oz (Event fabric) about $300.

I recently purchased the specter LT. Event fabric based on what I have read breaths more than Gortex type fabrics and based on what I have done whit it it is very breathable. The Patagonia jacket uses Patagonia's own H2No breathable fabric. Based on the reviews and jacket I saw at REI it looks promissing.

Babak,

I don't have specific information about the jackets you mention, but I have used Goretex Paclite jackets. If durability and breathability are important to you, I would recommend ruling out Paclite. It is neither durable nor breathable.

I had a MHW Xenon that was a Paclite with 70D face fabric. Awesome, super waterproof. But not SUPER breathable.

I had the old 2.5layer H2no, which isn't very breathable.

I'd stick to something 3-layer eVent with a full front zip. I have a Rab Drillium and it has a roll-away hood with wired peak as well as a bit of a drop tail. It's designed more as a multi-sport jacket than strictly for backpacking so it's a bit heavier than the Momentum but has a few extra features. For multi-sport use, I'd stick to something like the Drillium. If you didn't need sub-1 lb I'm testing a Paramo Vista right now that's much more ideal for cold temps.
