I was just thinking: Has anyone ever thought about making a down sleeping bag completely out of an unbreathable fabric (silnylon/spinnaker etc) and that it is fully seam taped/sealed?
Thought this would be perfect in cold conditions: warmth from VB effect, no moisture in down so fully lofted down for days on end, and fully waterproof as well (perhaps it could be equipped with a waterproof/breathable cowl for bivvying use)
Or am I missing something?
If it were fully waterproof….then the down would not be able to loft due to the inability to draw in air from outside the bag!!
I dont recall what it is is called, but there was a down system that was made with VB materials inside and out. It was inflated like a DAM. Depending on the amount of inflation, you could get temp ratings to a reputed -60 or some such thing.
However, it was very expensive ($1000) and relatively heavy (8lbs or so)… too heavy and costly for most use, but not bad when compared to a standard extreme cold down bag, extreme cold sleeping mat(s), and bivy.

Oh man, it would be like sleeping in a big down bubble wouldn't it.
