I recently splurged on a Western Mountaineering Ultralite which has been sitting on my guest bed since it arrived. Since we cleaned out the backpacking closet today (yay!) there is room to hang it. However, there doesn't seem to be a hang loop of any kind. There's a looped label at the foot, but if I hang it on that it seems to pull at the threads of the seam the label is sewn into. Is it safe to just drape the top of the hood over a hook, or will that put too much stress on a small area of fabric over time?

This takes up more room, but what I do is put a coat hanger inside the storage sack and hang that in the closet.

I realize many people hang their bags but I think most manufacturers, including Western Mountaineering, Feathered Friends, etc., recommend storing their bags loosely stuffed in a large breathable storage sack, which usually comes with it. I store all my down this way on wire shelving. I also store down jackets, pillows, etc. in old cotton pillow cases.

I use plastic clip hangers that come with my kids clothing. The bag is folded in half (to keep it from touching the floor) and clipped at hood and foot. The cloth bag WM includes with the sleeping bag protects the sleeping bag and alleviates any strain from hanging.

Honestly, for me it's largely about convenience- takes up less space this way and the bulky storage bag is no longer constantly rolling off my closet shelf. The reason I tried it in the first place though was noticing that the moosejaw store model of my bag was much loftier than my own. Since I started hanging my bags, I have the "perception" that they are now loftier in general, and shake out much more quickly after coming out of my backpack. Not science, but works for me.

I know that my local outdoors store has their wm bags hung up "closet style" with the rest of their bags. I don't see how that could hurt them at least.
