We have talked before here about the benefits of bamboo; a light and inexpensive composite material.. I considered it again now that I am shopping for snowshoes.

I read a comparison article here, and several of the reviews. But I only expect to use snowshoes once or twice a year, and I cant see paying $200 and carrying and extra 3 or 4 lbs. I believe the bamboo type would be light, packable, inexpensive, and meet my limited needs. In fact, it seems the teeth of my Stubai Universals will fit between the cord to engage ice.

I found this source; they cost the equivalent of $25. Anyone tried these? Miguel maybe? They are called kanjiki here in Japan.

ps. anyone know how to embed an active hyperlink into this text?

Hi Brett,
Kanjiki (or Wakan) is the Japanese traditional snowshoe. I think it is effective for wet snow. I have it.

In my personal experience, it is difficult to install to the boots. You should practice how to knot the Kanjiki’s ropes.

I think you can get more modern Kanjiki.
aluminum pipe and easy strap
plastic

I recommend it.

To add another word or two.
It's not made from bamboo. It's made from pliant branch.
My Kanjiki has two strong rubber band for each one. It makes easy to put it on boots.
Maybe nobody is using traditional Kanjiki except souvenir shop.
I put Kanjiki on my boot with crampon in my picture.

Hideaki,
Thank you for the information and links. I saw a hiker using these at Yatsugatake this month, which gave me the idea.
I ordered two pair today. I will report back on their usefulness. They weigh about 800g per pair.

Id love to hear your report. These black plastic ones look kinda cool – – http://www.naturum.co.jp/item/item.asp?item=862014

We just dealt with a blizzard here, and rumors of another being on its way have the local grocery store looking like a mad house…

Ive got skis but no snowshoes. Wanting to get some Yowies maybe, but for the very small amount of snowshoeing I'm likely to do, these Japanese shoes might fit the bill….. but the flotation looks absolutely dismal.
