I recently picked up a pair of long underwear botoms off Sierra Trading post, and it is made from comfortrel. I picked up the lightweight ones, and they are eerily similar to polartec power dry. (A lighter variation… not quite the thickness of the Patagonia r1, but a little lighter… maybe like the First Ascent mid weight baselayers). I got the long johns with a coupon for around $8

Does anyone know anything else about comfortrel? I remember reading on here somewhere that the expedition weight comfortrel is very similar to power stretch. I am assuming the mid weight would be similar to the normal power dry (r1).

Oh, I also picked up a merino balaclava that is fantastic. This was around $14.

thoughts? Experiences?

I have several Wickers pieces and am happy with the quality and US manufacturing. I have yet to try their current long underwear in any weight but have wicking long and short sleeve t-shirts, gloves and a light balaclava. The t-shirts wick well when running or at the gym. I find that their shirts run a little large; Large size is very long and loose body with good collar and sleeve fit/length. The medium fit is a little snug.

yeah, I got medium bottoms and they are quite snug. Not uncomfortable, but more like running tights on me. I was worried the larges would be too big.

Thanks for the insight.

I've been wearing their mesh boxer briefs on my last few backpack trips as well as running and at the gym and highly recommend them. Warm enough down to 40s and very comfortable. They aren't any cheaper than competitors but everything is USA made. They actually have a sale ending today: coupon code JOBS11 at checkout, http://www.wickers.com.

Great price for a baselayer if they're any good!

Do you know how much the pair weighs, Matthew?

Chuckle.
You want branded Polatec for what you are making? Expect to pay Malden Mills prices.
You want volume of *same* stuff but cheaper? OK, but you can't use the Polatec name.
Or you buy almost identical stuff from China much cheaper and give it your own name.

Cheers

@Roger… I was hoping you would chime in. The point you made is very true. I really like my power stretch and power dry stuff, but don't really like the prices.

______________

my bottoms weigh in at 4.5 oz.

Thank you! That's very light, lighter than my Smartwool lightweight pair. Maybe not as warm (or maybe it is?), but much easier on the wallet.

I don't have any of the thermals to weigh. My 2000 production light-weight Capilene bottoms in medium weigh 5.9 ozs. It sounds like the Wickers bottoms from Sierra Trading Post are lighter and probably offer similar warmth.

A search for Comfortrel pulls up a plastics concern which filed for which filed or came out of bankruptcy in 2009. I am unable to find more information about the fabric or trade mark.
