Hello,
For my last trip I bought a used Garmin Etrex Vista GPS. It is a current model with a black and white screen. It came with a set of 10 National Geographic Topo Map CDs showing trails for the entire state of California. I got it because I wanted a back-up system for navigating snowy passes and snow covered, above treeline trails.
That said, I found it incredibly tedious and time consuming to upload way points to the Garmin using the Topo maps plus there is not map on the screen like a car GPS. Is it any easier or better with the proprietary Garmin mapping software?
The problem I have with the Garmin maps is that the detail was really minimal compared to a topographical map. Does that little bit of detail work well? I'dd like to hear some opinions on how user friendly the Garmin Software is vs. the Topo software. Any general GPS comments are also welcome.
Thanks – Larry
