Anyone know where to pick up a Wilderness Permit for hiking into the Desolation Wilderness from Wright's lake? I'm planning to camp at Smith Lake.

Yup, coming from the west up Highway 50 you get permits at the Pacific Ranger District office east of Pollock Pines.

Cheers,

p.s. Camping's limited at Smith, but it's a beautiful cirque.
Thanks!
I've been to Smith once on a scouting mission for quick overnighters. Very nice spot. I'm a bit worried about getting a spot but I'm saying my prayers and ready to fall back to Grouse Lake if necessary
Thanks again. I'll let you know how it went.
Oh, also knocking on wood that I don't run into Bigfoot up there.
You can get them on-line & print them at home. I did that in July.
OVERNIGHT USERS – The new on-line service at http://www.recreation.gov will allow wilderness visitors to make their reservations for 50% of the quota any time of the day seven days per week.
