I've been using Darn Tough merino mesh 1/4 socks for a couple years now and love them, but after wearing through a new pair in a dayhike through the chute of Muddy Creek (an admittedly tough-on-footwear hike) I'm wondering if there might be a better choice.

I've had bad luck with Coolmax. Anyone have experience with the hyper thin drymax socks? Drymax claims high durability but I'm having a hard time finding any long term reviews.

I've had great success using Defeet Aireator socks. I have rotated the same four pair for two a day runs, both on road and off, and the socks are still going strong after three plus years. Many of the Defeet Aireator designs are "loud" but there are a few more sedate options. The Wooleator is the same sock bet made using wool, I have not used this sock so can not speak to durability.

The key for me has been to get 100% nylon socks. All other materials wear out quickly for me. Non nylon socks will even tear sometimes when I pull up hard on them. I'm still hiking with some of the nylon dress socks I bought at Penney's 35 years ago.

Heels and balls of my feet wear out at about the same time. I think part of the problem could also be the insoles that inov8 uses that have the little holes. Tiny rocks fit perfectly in the holes and can't be good for sock life.

Spring 2010, I switched to Drymax socks. I use the Trail, Lite Trail, and the Hyper Thin. In that period, I've gone through 6 pairs of trail runners including 3 pairs of Inov-8 Roclites and 4 pairs of road runners. The Drymax socks have minimal wear. I used to wear through a pair of Smartwool in about 6 months.

FWIW, I've got about 10 days of use divided by 2 pairs of Drymax. That's not much use yet, but there's no troubles so far.
