I happened across Ray's books on Amazon and I was stunned. Beyond Backpacking is going for $60.00 and the Tarp and net tent book is $70.00. This is for used books! I own a copy of each and while they are interesting reading there is no way they are worth that. Interestingly, copies of the PCT hikers handbook are around $30.00. I seem to recall them being much more than that in the past. So,does anyone want to make me an offer? Shall we start the bidding at $100.00?

Why are the Ray Jardine books so expensive?

Hmmm… I have a good used copy of "Beyond Backpacking" — I wouldn't mind letting it go for $50. :)
Simply put: he must not be printing the books anymore. So on Amazon and EBay you'll always see 'out-of-print' books jacked up sky high.
Heck, I have sold odd lot rap cd's from the 80's for $60 a pop on Amazon, since they were never reissued!

Ray mentioned yesterday in his blog that he is working on the second edition of Beyond Backpacking.
Two weeks ago, the cheapest offer for Ray Jardine's "Beyond Backpacking" at amazon.de was 305€ – more than 400 US$!!!
I've got one at home which is in a very good condition, so I started to dream about a new down quilt… :-)
Douglas: when I clicked on your blog link, I got this message: "Forbidden. You don't have permission to access /campfire/index.shtml on this server. Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request." I always thought Ray Jardine was a cult leader, now I'm getting enough hard evidence to report him to the CIA and FBI!
That's weird. Works fine for me. You could try going to rayjardine.com and clicking News. I wonder if that would work? Same place.
Douglas, thanks for the suggestion, but I get the same error message. But don't worry about me, I was about the last one to be able to get back into the Wild Things site, though since their most recent update it works OK again. I have the latest Adobe Flash reader, I have a Pentium 4, I allow all cookies, etc, etc. But I don't make my own gear, so no matter.
Guess what? Yesterday I bought a new copy of "The Ray-Way Tarp Book" at Half-Price Books here in tropical Seattle and paid $7.48! I think I'll go and clear out their inventory and put them on E-bay.
It seems the Jardine folks have enough time and energy to keep track of folks that post questions or comments that they don't like. If you fall in this group, you are then banned from their site. Welcome to a unique little club.
No price is too high.
Has anyone ever seen God and Ray Jardine in the same room at the same time , ever ? Coincidence ?
This should give the general idea of "why" .

I don't get it. Are you guys on static IP addresses? Otherwise, how would he know it was you?
Ray knows all. Refer to the post right before yours :).

…this is really sad. It's these questions and comments that can produce better products and services. Sometimes the truth is hard to hear, but one thing is a constant: People will always express their opinion and it's better they be able to do so in a way where you can engage them in a dialogue rather than in ways you can't.
Gotta love contract disputes. They inevitably create the UGLIEST legal battles.
