I recently picked up a pair of the Stoic Thrive shorts (Stoic is one of backcountry.com's house brands), and they are now my go-to hiking shorts. Weight for size M is 5.5oz on my scale, and they are insanely comfortable, come DWR coated, are incredibly stretchy. Added plus is that they have little cinches on the side so you don't need a belt to tighten/loosen them up, making them perfect for minimalism on the trail.

Downside is they have only two pockets — one for each hand and they pockets are small. You can fit a phone or wallet in them for around town wear, but it looks a little odd; one more pocket somewhere would make them perfect.

I know a lot of folks here go with ultralight running shorts — I don't think I'm ever going to be one of those people. I know it's not about style on the trail, but I still like my hiking gear to be suitable for everyday wear, and these are the lightest, most functional shorts I've found that fit the bill.

Dunno if this will help anyone else, but I've tried a bunch of different options, and these look like they will be hard to beat.

I agree that they look pretty dorky in the pics on the site. Look far better on. Fabric is incredibly thin and I'd call it a tech fabric — think shell jacket material. Taped seams are used and are appropriate. If I hadn't had good success with Stoic products before (and with bc's return policy) I wouldn't have ordered, but I'm glad I did.
