The search is not working, I get a "The connection has timed out The server at search.backpackinglight.com is taking too long to respond." error page. The rest of the BPL site is working fine.

You're not the only one. This has been an issue for me over at least the past two days.
While they're working to fix the issue try this through Google search:
textyouwanttosearchgoeshere inurl:www.backpackinglight.com
Same problem here for about two day now.
