I am going to be getting a new mp3 player. I just had an RCA one which died due to being repeatedly soaked by my sweat while running. I'm looking for something small and light (duh.), that is easy enough to use, and has a long battery life (no need for big fancy touch screens that eat power). Cheap is also a plus. Somewhat water resistant is a big plus.
I know some of you listen while on the trail, what;s your player?
the RCA player I had:

pretty good, cheap, very light, small, UI wasn't so good, and wasn't very sweat-proof.Thanks

Get yourself an iPod Shuffle, it doesn't have a screen, but it's easy to use, holds 2G worth of file, good battery life, and clips onto running short waistbands without being felt or pulling your shorts down. I think it weighs about 1oz….maybe.
That's what I use for trail running.
Sep 10, 2011 at 4:40 pm #1778225I second the shuffle. Probably the best audio for athletes out there. You won't need to look at a screen when running and the controls are easy to use without looking as well. Plus they're pretty cheap.
Sep 10, 2011 at 7:06 pm #1778269Sansa Clip+. Cheaper than the Shuffle (even for 4GB). Negligibly larger/heavier. Expandable memory. FM Tuner. Screen.
I went through this exercise a few months ago and could find no real upside to getting a Shuffle. Granted, I didn't have an iTunes account so that also factored into my decision.

Sep 10, 2011 at 10:24 pm #1778316++ on the sansa clip. Been using one for several years for workout/running. Dirt cheap, and great sound if replace the factory earphones with halfway decent earbuds. I have a $10 pair of JBuds that sound great.

Sep 11, 2011 at 4:13 am #1778351I have a Sansa Clip too and am happy with it, but the Coby player looks good for long distance walks since it uses AAA battery. Can anyone recommend other MP3 players that use AAA?? The coby unit may be hard to find. Mike
Sep 11, 2011 at 4:50 am #1778358SanDisk Sansa m240 (1 GB) or m250 (2 GB)
* Lightweight flash memory digital audio player–weighs just 1.5 ounces
* Microsoft PlaysForSure support for compatibility with wide range of online stores and subscription services
* Integrated FM radio with 20 presets; built-in microphone and voice recorder
* Powered by single AAA battery, for up to 19 hours of usageSep 11, 2011 at 6:40 am #1778373Is one of the few mp3 players with good sound.
Buy it, Rockbox.org it, throw away the earplugs and get a nice pair of cheap IEM's like the Hippo VB, soundmagic E10 or Brainwavz M2. Killer comboSep 11, 2011 at 10:38 am #1778441Another vote for the Sansa Cip+. Wife and I both have them for working out. Easy to use and copy files to (drag and drop, no extra software needed). $40-50 depending on whether you get 4/8 Gigs of storage.
I like Apple products, but not the Shuffle. Its over priced and limited without a display screen, IMHO.
Sep 11, 2011 at 1:05 pm #1778485I ended up going with a sansa clip+. I was tempted by the m240/50, because of the AAA battery, but it is a bit heavier, and more expensive where I got mine.
I wonder how long it will be before we have a cottage electronics industry…

If that ever comes true, I can guarantee you it will be Steve Evans of Suluk46 leading the calvary on that front.
Sep 11, 2011 at 9:55 pm #1778643If only you guys knew about some of the cottage industry electronics out there. They tend to make backpacking gear look cheap.
If your interested in the audiophiles forum of choice, feel free to head over to http://www.head-fi.org/
One of my other hobbies is audiophile electronics, only problem is i'm poor. lol.
My personal favorite of the "cottage" audiophile industry is jhaudio http://www.jhaudio.com/collection.php#1
I've got a set of custom JH13s. Unfortunately I'm to scared to take them hiking.sorry to go off the topic. Just thought you guys might get a laugh out of how ridiculous other people can be with their hobbies too.
Sep 12, 2011 at 9:19 am #1778750I use my Android smartphone as my MP3 player. I like having one device that does it all, one charger, one holster, etc. I listen to music while jogging and using RunKeeper (app) to track my run and when playing music it dims the music to give me status updates on how far I have gone, pace, whatever. If I had a heart rate monitor RunKeeper would sync with that too which gives you even more options.
FYI in case you want to go a different route.
Sep 12, 2011 at 8:02 pm #1779005+1 Sansa Clip+ — on Meritline right now in case anyone else needs to pick one up —
Cheers
