I had to try this one after reading about it in Backpacker magazine at the Hermits Hut Base Camp 1 store.

Brazil nut fire starter

It is edible and it is gear. It does burn like a candle as described in the magazine.

Not wanting to stop there I tried to start peanut shells on fire with some success but not stellar.

I figured if I ate the peanuts, kept the shells and used the burning Brazil nut to start up the shells it might create a small fire with which to dry small twigs in drizzly, rainy, or snowy conditions.

That theory has minimally worked. The peanut shells do burn, but if the wind puts them out they smoke a lot and smell pretty bad. At least I got some peanuts and brazil nuts to eat out of this test.

Nice… when you use the nut + peanut shells, are you placing them in a woodstove of any sort, or just mounding them? a "woodstove" consisting of a simple cut up vegetable can would go a long way towards protection from wind…
