I’m not sure if they are available in the American MontBell stores yet, but in October MontBell Japan started offering their new Super Merino Wool underwear series. I bought two of their medium weight short sleeve shirts and one medium weight long sleeve shirt, all in the new “light putty” color, and have been wearing them almost every day since then.

I can tell you they are the best wool undershirts I have ever worn. Though they are called “medium weight” they are actually as thin and light as my former lightweight Montbell wool undershirts. They also have a stretch fiber component sewn in so that the wool does not lose its shape. After a week wearing one of them back in October during a hike it was as form-fitting as on the first day. One thing I really like about the shirts is the extra long hem, so that you can tuck them deep into the pants without fear of the shirt pulling out… something that I often lament about other undershirts in the past.

I know there has been a lot of debate about the best wool undershirts, so I hope I’m not just making things more complicated for those looking for wool underwear, but I just thought you’d like to know that there is a new choice out there. MontBell has been listening it seems.

I have been fondling those new Montbell MW merino 'unmentionables' in the Shibuya store; trying to resist. They seem so silky and stretchy and (relatively) inexpensive.. Now after your tempting review I will have to buy one set. I have been wanting to replace my capilene bottoms with wool. Just in time for my Yatsugatake trip on Sat.
You are a bad influence, Sir.
:)
