So, My son and I did a SubUltralight weekend here in Texas over the weekend. I had bought a big bookbag at Old Navy on Clearance at about 6 oz for $4!
Equipment list … Tarptent, Montbell #3 in a 8L ultrasil drybag, 3/4 insulmat inflatable, Patagonia Pullover, Warm Hat, Warm gloves, Small Thermarest pillow/stuffsack for clothes, Jetboil with small canister, toiletries, Tec Scout headlamp, Photon and Whistle on Lanyard, lighter, emergency Esbit tab and emergency mirror, 2 L Platy hydration bladder, 4L Platy water tank (for camp water), Inline Justdrink Filter, 20oz Gatorade bottle for drink, mixes, Wendy's spoon, 45 ft of paracord, Little Nipper with Libation, Odor proof zipper bag for food, windshirt, and a small swiss army knife, Emergency poncho, Black Trashbag, backup minidroppers of Aqua Mira, cash & ID, car keys, and a Vivitar Digital camera.
Food each … two Propacks, two ziplocks of oatmeal, four energy bars, two Gu's, two bags kingsize peanut M&M's, and the first day's lunch was 6 inch subway.
Total weight with full water and 20 oz of gatorade was just under 15 lbs at the trailhead for me …. and my Son was around 12 with no tent, but a G-pack instead of the bookbag.
We only did 14 miles (Extreamly rugged) over the weekend, and futzed around taking a lot of pictures and watching the hawks, but it was so liberating hiking with such a light pack! We almost floated down the trail compared to other trips we had made. I normally would have hauled in at least 5 L of water and struggled with a 30 lb pack, but with the super light pack it we arrived at camp with plenty of water left in the 2 L bladders, Water sources were easy to hit, and not one BLISTER! Addias gym shoes and a light pack are the way to go.
Also carried Komperdale sticks.
Temps were 32 for a low and 55 for the high, misting conditions with fog.
