A buddy got me into reading Daniel Arnold's book "Early Days in the Range of Light: Encounters with Legendary Mountaineers." It's a great read for information about 19th century exploration of the High Sierras and a thoughtful journey through the author's own attempt to recreate the climbs and trips without modern equipment. Well worth a read if you're looking for a good book.

    I also recommend:

History of the Sierra Nevada (1946) by Farquahar.
Up and Down California: 1860-1864 by Brewer.

    Lots of great info!
