Hello! I'm the mom of the above mentioned "kid". I have looked everywhere for a backpack to fit our son, and I haven't come up with one single backpack that is big enough.

Here's the deal (please forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong category)-
Our son, who is almost 19 years old, is preparing for a church mission and we are looking for a backpack that he can use for the next two years. It will NOT be used for "backpacking", so we don't need that type of backpack, but we need a very sturdy, well built, light, backpack that will fit him comfortably even though he's not an "off the rack" kind of kid. He's built like a linebacker. He's 6 foot 8.5 inches tall, WIDE shoulders, long torso, his Levi's have a 42 inch waist, long legs (his inseam is 36 inches).

If anyone can direct me to a website that carries backpacks for extra large guys, that would be fantastic. The backpack doesn't need to be extra large, but must fit properly while carrying about 10-15 pounds of books, and other small misc. items while he walks for several miles per day or on a bicycle (which is another challenge in itself – to find a bike that is tall enough!). All of the school backpacks that we buy him only last about 3 months – the shoulder straps begin to rip because the backpack is not wide enough and the shoulder straps are not long enough.

Any help or advice would be truly appreciated. We need to buy one before about November 2011.

Thanks-

My first thought is to try Joe over at Zpacks. the dynemma x pack is very strong and he could probably build something suitable. They are custom packs so they are not cheap but would likely last for many years. Joe is awesome and I have a couple of his packs.

You boy is light for his size, unless you meant a 32 inch waist! 42? Gotta be a typo. I'm shorter and narrower and outweigh him.

For the pack, I recommend you go to an REI and try on many packs…have them show you what to look for and even if you don't find a pack you like, you'll learn what measurements to cull out and use when reading specs.

Bikes for guys that tall are EASY! The age of the midget is past. Ho ho. Check out the "29-er" options (refers to a wheel size) and go to a real bike shop that carries them for a mission similar to the one at REI: get sized and learn what specs to shop for (tip: it's the "top tube" measurement that drives bike sizing, not the old "seat tube" numbers like 21" or 25", etc…). Trek has a series of brand-owned stores and they produce bikes that fit your boy, will last and don't have to cost a mint (they have $$$ versions, too). You do get what you pay for, of course.

Yes, 6'8, 225 lbs with a 42" waist sounds a little crazy. Maybe his jeans are a 42, but there is no way his waist is 42".
