Anyone currently using one of the new ULA backpacks?

I'm in the market for a new pack to handle 25-40lb loads, and am considering the ULA Catalyst and Circuit. My average pack weight will be in the mid 20's, but on occasion I'll need to carry a pack that weighs in the high 30's. I don't want to buy more pack than I need, and so the 35lb limit listed on the Circuit looks attractive (I don't mind overloading for a day or two) but I'm not sure how accurate the claims are.

Can anyone provide any first hand experience?

I haven't used one, but if you're interested in the ULA packs you might find this podcast interesting (interview with Brian Frankle on PracticalBackpacking).

There is also lots of good discussion at Practical Backpacking on the ULA Packs. Do a search when you get there. Based on all I read there I ordered a Conduit last month.

I own a Catalyst (single stay) and am extremely impressed with its comfort, craftsmanship, and versatility. Although, I've never had more than 25 lbs. in it, I could easily see it carrying 35-40 lbs. with no troubles. Even still, it doesn't seem overkill for loads in the 15-20 lbs. range. Overall, this pack is the most impressive piece of gear I or anyone else I know owns b/c of its overall utility. It really is a fantastic pack.

Having said all that about the Catalyst, any pack you get from Brian will be of the highest quality and comfort.

First, I like this bag. I've used it on several small hikes and a 75 miler / 10 day trek, along with a buddy who bought the same for the same events.

I talked to Brian @ ULA prior to purchase. He recommended the Catalyst vs. Circuit for the weights described, very similar to what you've indicated.

It rides well once adjusted (ie straps and dual frame stay), which was pretty easy to do.

If you're going to carry heavier loads, I would suggest the dual (vs single) framestay).

The pockets on the belt are very handy.
It has good volume and is durably built. We did have difficulty getting items in / out of side pockets when the main bag is packed.

My pack weights with the Catalyst have been 18 – 40 lbs. 18 – 30 was *very* comfortable. 35 was ok. (FYI, my Catalyst weighs 1.5 kg, somewhat pushing the UL status).
Above that, I’d likely switch to my external frame pack, as this pack becomes less comfortable for the load.
ULA’s recommendation for the Catalyst is 30 – 40, I’d suggest 35 as a max.

I would consider buying this again if the delivery was a little better. I would otherwise recommend that ULA team up with a CSO (Customer Service Organization). That would, in my mind, be the best of both worlds, allowing Brian to focus on the products. Time was becoming critical when the promised date came and went by 2 weeks with little communications. There are several reviews on the Catalyst in the Reader Reviews section. Hope that helps.
