My wife and I are doing the WCT next week. My question is. Can I get by with a ground cloth
under a SMD Haven tarp or are their enough bugs to warrant bringing the net tent along?

I group of doctors/nurses I work with did the trail last year and said people without netting suffered. I know you have already reached that conclusion, but I was hoping to beg for some pictures after you come back :) It looks like a blast

When we get back I will post a trip report and list what worked and what didn't and a link to my Flicker pictures.

We just got back from the hike. I would bring the bug tent/fly. You would be fine without it, however, for the small weight difference, preventing mosquitos from biting you while you are sleeping is a nice bonus.
Fair warning the trail is quite muddy around the Logan Creek/Camper Bay/Cullite areas. Bring good boots.

Depends. I have only been affected by sand flies at Thrasher and Campers. Further north I never saw one skitter.

I just got back from the WCT (I'll put some kind of trip report up soon), and I agree with Mike's comments in general. Something (perhaps it was sand fleas) bit me numerous places on one of my ankles at Thrasher Cove. The bites were sore for most of the trek. I brought my BA Fly Creek 1, and it worked well for me. I was bitten just by sitting out on the beach. I'm guessing you'd be happier with a bug tent.

Don't forget that sand flies stay away from deet and die off at night when the temps cool. They loooove sweat.
