I love my almost seven year old Exped Sirius Extreme. It has saved my butt many times, but carrying 6.5 lbs of a tent is getting tiresome. I use tents under two different situations, so I figured I do need two tents at this point.

Situation one: walk two-three miles, camp for a week or so, no more than two adults. Her,e space is a must, weight isn't too big of an issue (but still not as heavy as my Exped), needs to be solid when it comes to serious, constant and continued downpours (floor must be able to handle as tiny stream as well), headroom would be nice and needs to have the ability to have 99% privacy (like TT Hogback). Will definitely prefer a 3-4 person tent here. What are your suggestions?

Situation two: outings mostly out in the Catskills and Adirondacks with the missus and the six-year-old (and occasionally by myself) for 1-4 nights, needs to be as light as possible but not be a tarp and needs to have a bathtub floor (missus requirements), spacious and airy. What are your suggestions here? (possibly looking at Rainshadow 2)

It sounds as though either the Tarptent Rainshadow or the Tarptent Hogback would do for both scenarios.

Now that I think about it, Hogback may be perfect for my situation #1 (unless anyone knows a three-person tent that offers similar protection), but I still can't decide on what to get for #2. Hogback is surely lighter than my current once, but I'm pretty sure I could do better.

Any other suggestions?

For a 2-3 mile hike into a week-long base camp, I would not care about weight even a little bit — I'd bring my 6-person dome tent that we use car camping. It weighs a ton, but I can stand up inside (and I'm 6-2.) Heck, I'd bring some big silnylon tarps, too, and set up a covered kitchen area and put an Alaska rain fly over the tent. After all, I could make several trips from the car….

The Hogback looks like a cool tent, but I haven't used one. We did own a Rainshadow when we hiked with our daughter — it fits three adults in comfort. Neither of them would give me the headroom I'd want for a long basecamp, but the interior space would be good.

We got a Six Moons Designs Lunar Duo for light backpacking with two people. Great tent, very roomy, weighs 2.5 pounds, plenty of privacy and weather protection. I like the two big doors and vestibules, and did I mention it's really roomy? Might work for #2.

EDIT: sorry, missed the part about the 6 year old. Definitely the Rainshadow II or the Hogback.

Ken, I wouldn't mind carrying my huge car camping tent in scenario one had I not had to travel half way around the world to get there.

As for lunar duo… there is absolutely no way to fit a third person in there?

Ah, Michael, now I understand. Sorry.

While the Lunar Duo has a cavernous interior and plenty of volume, the width simply won't allow a third sleeping pad/person IMHO.
