I just got back from a 5 day hike in Mount of the Holy Cross Wilderness south of Vail, Colorado…slept in my ultralight-asym Hennessy and couldn't get comfortable to get much sleep (forgot to snag sleeping pills from a friend!).

Who builds custom hammocks? i want a hammock that lies flat like the Jacks-r-Better "Bridge" but a lot lighter and uses my trekking poles for the stabilizer bars. i'm only 5'6" and 155 pounds so don't need their mammoth model for 6'3", 250 pounders. i don't have the time or talent to make my own…who can i ask to build it for me?

There might be someone here, but I'd seriously suggest hammockforums if you don't get a reply.

I know for a fact a few people have made bridges like you describe there, and I'm sure, for the right cash, they could be persuaded to make one for you.

Make your own bridge hammock video by Grizz (Grizzly Adams on HF). He has several videos on YouTube about his Grizz Bridge hammocks. Weighs just over 16 oz. You could modify the dimensions for your size and save some weight. I think that he also makes them for other people but has along wait time.

Try to find a bridge hammock to try before you commit a lot of time and effort to one. I have gotten to play with a couple of different ones and could not lay in either for more than a couple minutes. They were worse than laying in a HH for me….and I could not sleep in the HH at all. Never had that problem with any other hammocks.

Paul is right that not all hammocks, just like anything else, work for all people. I was never comfy enough in a Hennessy. Love my Bridge from JRB, but even it requires I make concessions.

I recently got a Grand Trunk UL and bugnet from PapaSmurf (member here & HF) and it just might work for me at 6'1". I really want it to work since the total setup is LIGHT!!!

You need to add your email address to your profile before you can be PM'd…

HF.net guy here…   Jared at SimplyLightDesigns.com is known as THE custom guy.  I’m sure lots of folks can, but most like Brandon at Warbonnet are going to steer you to a product they make that fits what you want, and in my experience, that’s not a bad idea.  I tried some custom ideas, and for a hammock, its really tricky.  And there’s so many folks making them, there’s almost nothing that hasn’t been tried.  I went back to a simple rectangle, gathered end hammock until finally settling into my Superior Gear hammock with sewn in insulation – which is now my opinion that its the way to go, though not the lightest option.  Couple of others doing something similar, like Dutch.

I had Jared make me a custom pentagon tarp I designed and I’m about a year into using it, and liking it.  Jared is quick and will help you with materials for a very reasonable cost.

It’s always fun to see old threads pop up and find that the topic interested me 14 years ago as well!  I’m hoping that the OP found something in the ensuing decade and a half…

The sarcasm is completely fair to point out my denseness with regard to the dates on the actual posts in the thread.  I will say though, that when I searched on ‘hammock’ and sorted by date, it was towards the top of the list with a date of early Feb 2025.  This must be the date it was last visited?  I sincerely thought I was responding to a relatively recent thread and was just oblivious once I got to it.

Still applies, though, Jared is awesome!

@RS Cope – I just reread my post and it does indeed come across as snarky…Sorry about that!  Not my usual style.

There are quite a few companies that will do this in the Hammock world. To some degree, it depends on your level of “custom” as most of the companies will customize their designs to some extent. However, if you want them to create a design or create a hammock from your design, a couple of very small cottage vendors which come to mind. Majestic Hammocks are all the rage these days and is likely to be a good company to work with. I personally have worked with Teton Hammocks to make an ultralight 40 degree underquilt, and my experience with him tells me that he would likely be able to work with you as well, but tends to be on the pricey side.

There are a lot of good hammock companies out there, another popular one is Dream Hammock. They fall into the category of custom hammocks of their own designs, but with a lot of options to customize.

I also would suggest going to a local Hammock Hang if you can. There often are people there who make hammocks, and can recommend companies you can work with. Hammock Forums is always a good resource for these and for the information you seek.

*facepalm* You asked for a Bridge Hammock. Dutchware is probably your best option for bridge. He intends to come out with a quilted version soon, but hasn’t released it yet.

FWIW, I think any hammock you get from any of the vendors I mentioned is going to be worlds better than a Hennessy. I personally find Hennessys to be disappointingly low quality, overly stiff, and use very outdated materials (IE: cheaply made).

Warbonnet Ridgerunner is their bridge hammock. I’ve read about folks using trekking poles for the spreader bars.

I have a WB Blackbird which is cut to have a very flat lay and is a little lighter. I find it very comfortable.

They are not custom made per se but the flattest lay bridge hammock “commercially” made are those made by “Just Bill” Townsend.  They are very similar to the “Grizz Bridge” that Dale previously mentioned as Just Bill and Grizz are good friends who collaborated with each other as they developed their bridge designs.  He has another full time job but makes these hammocks as a long time side business.  His website is thisgearsforyou.com.  His website is terrible but he assists via numerous and thorough emails.  I have his “Happy Medium” bridge hammock, a netless bridge hammock that weighs 13.8 ounces and his “Just a Covered Bridge” hammock, an integrated netted bridge hammock that weighs 13.5 oz (both weights w/o bars).  The “Covered Bridge” that I have is lighter than the netless “Happy Medium” because I opted for a lighter weight fabric for the “Covered Bridge”.  They are both designed to work with spreader bars that he sells (a pair of my carbon fiber bars weigh a total of 6.1 oz) but he is so helpful I am sure he will advise how to rig up with hiking poles.  Bill does not build to order and at times has had quite a waiting list but in the last year or so he has tried to keep in stock a good assortment of models/fabric options for prompt sale.

As mentioned previously bridge hammocks can require a fair amount of “tweaking” to get dialed in and I have found Just Bill’s hammocks definitely require suspension/ridgeline/underquilt adjustments to get everything just right.  It took me about five nights of sleeping in each of them in my back yard to get adjusted to my liking but once I did, I love sleeping in them.

Having said that, I do find in general a properly sized gathered end hammock much easier to sleep in without much adjustment.  And BTW I am in the queue to order a Majestic gathered end hammock, considered by many to be the most comfortable gathered end hammock but they are netless and are definitely not ultralight.
